and expecting to be blown up by a mine every minute, that my nerves go to blazes. When we come back we have 24 hours to make good any defects and then we are at ½ hours notice to go out again; the upshot is that everyone in the mess is awfully jumpy. I am afraid that the end is as far off as ever. I only hope that if we win, the terms of peace will not be discreditable to us, but I doubt if many of us will see the end. This must be very dull reading, but so many of my pals in submarines have been killed, that it makes one feel depressed.

How are things going with you out there; you must all feel awfully proud of your first contingent, they absolutely saved the situation. The Australians have done splendidly out on the Dardanelles. I have met officers who have come back from there; and they say that
