May 9. Very hot. Went to 24 Bn hqrs & had tea with Genl JM Ross at 5th CB hqrs & much gossip. Bn went to F.L. rh of left relieving 25th. Self rode out to Transport lines to take [?]

10. Prosecuted at Central [?] (BELLACOURT) all day till 6 pm. Then went up to [?] wh. reached at 2.30 am. Fine but cold.

11. V. Fine. Maj F. Grosvenor (BM of 6thCdnBde) & the CO visited us in daytime & Major Kirkland at night.

12. Sund. - Big 'fishtail' trap on our Co. (A) from 3.45 am to 4.30 am. Lt Thomas lost eye [illegible] Sidney Turner (my old CSM in 88th & a very fine fellow) killed & many others killed & wounded. This trench of ours formed the night hours of the Neuville [illegible]. It was deep & wide & had no cover at all except such we could make. Enemy saps ran right up to our blocks & whole front line on both sides ran through series of houses - This we changed our [?]& altered [?}.
