Oct 5. We were in tents.. the weather was fine. The men were cheery & very glad to get a rest and a wash.

Oct 6. Turned over Co. to Montgomery (DS) & marched a detail of 8 men to Acheun Sta where we entrained for Etafles for Lewis Gun School at Le Touques. Fine breezy day. Saw Ross Capt McKenzie & Stan Biggs & Andrews in rest spital at Warlay. Travelled in the car with sevl other officers including V.G. Tupper of 16th Bn. (Gordon Tupper afterwards got M.C. & then his death wound - a fine chap). Tupper & I shared a tent at this school.

Oct 7. Arrd at Abbeville at midnight & stayed 12 hours - Some of us went into the delightful town & had an excellent meal at the Hotel Tete de Boeuf but nearly issed our train - arrd Etables at 4. I had a glorious tea & hot bath at the Officers' club & after walked out to Le Touquet. In tents - v. wet - nothing to eat except bully beef.
