My duty was to arrange for digging a new assembly trench. Came in for bombing attack & very heavy shelling - made the ground shake. My party untouched by 1 offr of 28th Bn & 2 men killed bside me - others wounded - Very wet & mosh awfully muddy - On the way in saw wounded German to whom we have a drink stood by all night & got in about 6 am.

3 Oct. Short sleep & then Ross & I had a magnificient hot breakfast of curried fowl with real hot tea - thanks to a parcel from Milly Barnardiston. Inform detailed for [illegible] pantry. Later still at night with Lt Archer of A.Co. ordered to take a party of about 60 made of A.C. & details for trench digging outside Kenora. At very start 2 out of 4 guides & others wounded by 5.qs & a little later Archer wounded. We pushed on until some more shells wounded or killed remaining guides & others. Took shelter in a stinking shallow trench not having any idea where we were. Night pitch dark - Sent for stretcher party & guides. An awful night while waiting tried to rest & put
