10 Sept Sunday. Misty. Ch Parade. Got ready for front line. Marched out with my platoon at 2.30 pm. & after long walk got into our support trench at 7.30 pm. This was in Death Valley at Coutalmaison. Heavy shelling with H.E. of larger calibre. Soldiers role was taken at Brickfields (see large photo in Parlt Bldgs Victa) . V. hot in the pm.

11 Sept. Heavy shelling all the time - No casualties to my platoon. LtCol Tait buried by shell & badly twisted. Had to be carried out. Major JM Ross took over Bn - Major Latta went to Bn H.Q. as 2nd i/c. At night in command of my own & [?] platoon detailed to dig a jumping off trench in No Man's Land. It was my duty to go over the top first & site the trench 100 yds ahead of our front line Capt Ken Taylor ASO in charge of the business saw me off & was killed before we got back. Did our work under intense barrage from artillery of both sides - v. hot.
