1915 20 July. Attested to the 88th Regiment (Victoria Fusiliers) as a private and given appointment of provisional Lieutenant with seniority from 20 June 1915. As this appointment was subsequently confirmed this date (20 June) is the official date of my first commission--J. C. Bridgman [?] H.G. Pocbck TEBHart were appointed provisional lieutenants at the same time.

H Rous Cullin Ltcol. was oc Dept B.H. Harrison Capt was adjutant. One of my first duties was to inspect the regimental guards at Esquimalt although I had only the haziest ideas of the nature of my duties and of the routine of inspection.

The Regiment was encamped in the agricultural show buildings at the Willows Victoria. The officers being in tents. Joh Bridgman and I shared a tent. On one of first nights our tent was pulled down while we were inside. This was considered a joke and accepted as such.
