My dear Mother

Your tin box of strong peppermints and licorice has reached me safely and I am enjoy them in country lately taken from the Germans. It is indeed a country laid waste with Biblical thoroughness.

Every inch of the surface has been changed by shell fire. It is no wonder that the Boche could not stand it.
