some times + never in the trenches.

The sketch of a dugout which I sent Halb was done at Scottishwood a famous place in the famous salient. The tree indicated behind the dugout (or really bomb proof) was cut off by a shell so cleanly that the top fell straight down. Four officers were killed I believe in this dugout + whole neighbourhood is terribly battle scarred. The fighting seems to have passed backwards + forwards over this ground since the early days of the war + it is still warmly shelled.

By the way address me as of my present Battn [illegible] Canadians BEF c/o Army P.O. London + tell everyone else ok - the Land + Water + Punch find me at irregular intervals but are eagerly read when they arrive .

If you get L+W for 18 Aug you will see an article + might in the Salient wh. accurately describes part of our life in the front line - that phase is past. Much love to Mother, Susy + Leffie. Kind remembrances to Fowkes, Pomeroy, Miss Gore + the others.

Your loving brother

Arthur
