will ask to get leave to Canada when I report at the Air Board in London, but don't count on my coming. It is quite as possible that they refuse as that they consent. Anyway I shall probably get about six months comparative rest away from the actual struggle.

Mother dear, thank you ever so much for the sox and the book and handkerchief. All arrived quite safely and in time for my birthday. Do you know I was my birthday until a couple of days after. It had completely slipped my mind. Your boy is now 24 years old and will soon reach the age of "violent" discretion – half way between twenty and thirty – though believe me, I have learned discretion in various forms since coming to France.
