XLI.

a pretty hungry looking lot of men one has torn the toe caps of his boots, and about 6 inches of socks appear thro his boot. We chaff them tremendously about getting lost but they say they knew very well they were going to Albernie. However it is satisfactory to know they are back and now we can get on ahead.

May 26th. Move camp on ahead 3 miles on a very high mountain and many a drop of perspiration ouses out from the travellers forehead. One man gets homesick and gets a week's leave to go & see his family. We have reached a lovely camping place by a pretty little lake abounding with trout. So now we have hopes of a change in the grub line.

May 27th. Working still on line down steep mountains very dangerous chaining
