My dear Mother
I have wanted to get a line off before, but have been in such an unsettled state since my arrival that I have not been able to manage it yet.  I have also wanted to be able to tell you something definite about my chances of getting attached to a Reserve [?] here, all I can say at present is that my chances look pretty slim & I seem to be fairly up against it.  Apparently a new order has come out that all officers who have not already been overseas, who come over with drafts from Canada, have got to return almost immediately or else I believe revert to the ranks.  Of course I can't bear the idea of returning to Canada as a "conducting officer"

Segregation Camp 1st Canadian Reserve [?] Seaford Sussex My dear Mother I have wanted to get a line off before, but have been in such an unsettled state since my arrival that I have not been able to manage it yet. Of course I can't bear the idea of returning to Canada as a "conducting officer" when I know my services could be better utilized, & I also don't altogether relish the thought of going into the ranks with the class of men these days.
