My Dear Dodie

Nearly every time I write Nell Ryan, have always enquired after you, so you see your letter came not only as a surprise, but a great pleasure too.  Am most interested in all your news & am so glad you are having a good time & making the best of these horrible times, after all it is the only thing to do to try & forget it.  I am in the line now & Dodie having just one hell of a time.  Am in the fighting zone, though up to now have not been in any of the attacks but we are & have been standing by since the offensive started, moving from one place to anotherSo we expect before many days to see the Germans in their mass formation.  I am waiting now to make sure you will hear from me, but am afraid my letter will be a short one, as I have to go up to the front line in an hours time to look over our frontageIt is rather hard luck for us, we had only completed a whole month in the line & was due for 2 weeks rest, when

My Dear Dodie

You are a real dear to write me such a long & sweet letter. I can assure you it was very welcome.

Am in the fighting zone, though up to now have not been in any of the attacks but we are & have been standing by since the offensive started, moving from one place to another. So we expect before many days to see the Germans in their mass formation. I am waiting now to make sure you will hear from me, but am afraid my letter will be a short one, as I have to go up to the front line in an hours time to look over our frontage.

It is rather hard luck for us, we had only completed a whole month in the line & was due for 2 weeks rest, when
