I was Staff Captain [illegible] towards the last and had a taste of it all but nothing came up to St. Gloria at the 3rd Battle at Ypres for sheer hell & misery & shelling & we were not nearly so well organized as we were at the Somme. We were much more efficient at the staff work & artillery quite different. One felt one was doing something and behind one the ground we had won and we lived in deep [illegible] (at times)
