of course you see some fearful sights but that soon wears off. I was sent out one night with another fellow to mend our barb wire which had got broken by shells and just as we got hold of the wire a flare light was sent up by the Huns and of course we dropped right on our faces while they opened fire on us, I thought that every shot would get us but nothing did, we mended the wire and got back all right. The German trenches are only about 40 to 50 yards from ours and I marvel how they [illegible - two words] get one of us. I have had fellows shot on each side of me by rifle fire and I don't object
