I saw at least 40 shells fired at one of ours but no damage done. Today was a glorious spring day & we could see them well. The inhabitants go on with their plowing & sowing & don't seem to mind the shelling. Many houses are wrecks & most of the churches all through here are mere shells & they were big churches once -- I had a great ride into a town - rode along the tow-path of a river for miles great bridle path & a very pleasant change from the cobbles -- They are so hard on horses -- I have seen little of the pretty French girls I think they all fled to |
