| + | 5. Col Mantagne, Maj Rispin visited us at Arras. I went forward to Adv Hqrs before I [illegible] les marquion to stay. Found Hqrs in camouflaged open trenches fairly comfortable but crowded. First Hqrs of the kind I have seen - Surface of the ground kept level & no trace of excavation. Chambers cut into sides of trench roofs with i[illegible] & all camouflaged - no connecting trenches. Saw Cambrai for first time. This has been built by Germans recently. Bulgaria capitulated. | ||

30. Very wet. B. Mess went forward
Oct 1. Heavy rain, Bright later. Went to Adv. Hqrs by every kind of transport. Roads very bad. Enveloping Cambrai with hard fighting.
