my men into No Man's Land for the second time I certainly did think that it was my sentence of death but we were all fairly cheerful & the men worked splendidly

14 Septr. The Day. Recd. 10 lrs from home 2 papers & 1 parcel - 38 observation balloons in sight & numberless planes- not a Boche balloon or plane in sight. First appearance of the mysterious "Tanks" as they were called. ("Male" with 6lb. guns & M.G.'s & "female" with M.G.'s only) Custance carried in badly wounded.

15 Septr. The great attack - More "tanks". (These tanks are peculiarly shaped moving metal forts with revolving catterpillar treads they had wheels behind used for steering. These were afterwards discarded. They moved very slowly but could get over every kind of obstruction). Guns moving up & getting into action again with great speed. Prisoners coming in. Terrific
