Oct 3  Short sleep & then Ross & I had bk'fast of hot tea & curried fowl.  in pm detailed for burying party.  Later with Archer of A party ordered to take A Co for trench digging astride Kenora trench.  On starting guide & [ano?] wounded & later on Archer two guides & [ano?] seriously wounded by whizzbangs.  Held my men in shallow wet muddy stinking trench while waiting for guides.

Oct 1 Mon V. fine. Marched out @ 6:45 pm to garrison support trenches w. of Courcelette. All guns moving up. Long wanderings to find a French home.

Oct 2 Tues Stayed where we were. Very little shelling. at dusk with party of 20 sent to Kenora trench to arrange for digging new trench. Came in for bomb attack & extraordinary heavy shelling. My party untouched but 1 off'r 29th & 2 men killed & others wounded by one shell. Very wet & most awfully muddy. Stood by all night & got in about 6 am.
