My dearest Mother
We have reached the last day of another month of winter and so far have got on very well. We are now in the trenches but have day quarters and very little annoyance from the enemy except a little gas. He is wishing he had never thought of the stuff for he receives more and worse than he can give. There is very little danger to us now from gas so long as every one is vigilant and obeys orders but a gas mask is an uncomfortable thing to wear for long.
It may be my good fortune to spend my birthday in England this year. If some ways I should not mind delaying my leave a little
