and boar.  At least when were getting tired they gave us another position in a new track + I chose a post which seemed to give a fair field of fire.  It was all snap shooting at the best + the animals made not noise in their movements.  In this place I caught sight of a small boar disappearing in the bush so I got off my rifle at a spot where I hoped the bullet might find him.  However he did not go there.  Then a blackcock and a [illegible] hen came over + flew for miles + I saw some other black cock go over + continue indefinitely.  Then I saw a fox slipping diagonally across a ride. I fired at him while he was still in the open + thought I had got him for he turned a back somersault at the shot.  But he got away.  In this drive all the luck was with me though the fox was nearer to another gun than to me but he did not see it until after my shot.

We then began to feel hungry + tired but the garde champetre said there were some big boar still on this hillside + it would be worth trying them from another angle.  So away we tramped + took up another line.  Almost at the start I saw the next man to me pointing his rifle towards the beaters (strictly against orders) and jumping about evidently trying to get a better view of something + I watched his rifle swing round until it covered me + then I dropped flat
