My dear brother

I have three letters from you of different kinds all very welcome as usual. But one of them makes me wonder if the strain of work & worry that you must undoubtedly be enduring has not seriously affected your judgment.

You talk of the enlistment or rather enrolment of men up to 50 in England proving that there is work for you to do there or over here. To begin with you are over 50; next, men of that age are not being used for war work yet; next, the work they will be used for will, if military at all, be home defence. Do you not think that of that age & class there are hundreds of thousands in England? now really Lindley as a man of naturally sound judgment do you really think that you would be a more useful citizen by leaving your work and those dependent
