help us for some time because everyone is under the same strain. The men are so exhausted that the sentries can't really keep awake & are consequently seeing all sorts of unrealities.

The trench is probably blown to pieces in places so that one can't tell what is going on down the trench.

But we get through somehow & after some days get relieved living on biscuits & cheese & water - generally wet through probably very muddy (such mud!). Then comes the crucial & most wearing time of the relief. The new troops after much delay come in during the
