This sounds pessimistic + is probably not correct but that is the feeling we bring back from the front line.  It is a comfort that it is obvious from questioning German prisoners that they not only feel the same way but with less hope.  I saw a most dramatic incident in the dusk of evening silhouetted against the sky.  Some German prisoners trying to come in + being pursued + killed to the last man by German artillery + bullets
