XXXVI.

May 17th. My birthday so I'll wish myself many happy returns as no one else does and celebrate the occasion by moving into a fresh camping place by 98 mile post . The bushes are wet and one has to keep from touching them as you naturally get quite a shower bath every time you do as the trees have so much foliage.

May 18th. We do quite a good day's work today getting 1½ miles more to add to our line. Finally we stop abruptly as there is a precipice 600 ft high to be got over or else got round somehow. So we go home and leave the descent for a whole day.

May 19th. We are running short of grub so the surveyor together with two packers start off to find Comox Lake where the supplies are stored, telling us he won't be
