see what great treasures are buried under that heap of rock; we come to the spot lean the rocks right and left; dig down 3 feet as sign of anything excitement prevails as we all agree 4 ft must be the depth treasures are generally buried at, but when we are down 5 ft still there is nothing but sand and gravel and our excitement drops down to zero; and we give it up as a bad job and put the rest of the day in working in the bed of a dry creek with the gold pans for the precious metal and don't get [?] a colour "Nil Desperandum"
May 9th. Again the bugle sounds and orders are given to pack up our baggage and move on 2 miles ahead so by 12 noon we are once more in a fresh camp; but they all
