Tuesday - Aug. 24th

Go on pass to Nieppe & Bailleul - interview with Col. Armstrong - no chance with Canadian Engineers - get jolty ride in motor transport lorry to Bailleul - climb old church tower (1706) in corkscrew staircase - north Lancashire regiment marches thru - very dirty, tired & dusty - with leather equipment. Germans starting in again here with long range guns. 16th goes into trenches. Harvest almost entirely gathered here. My papers for commission in Imperials - RE or artillery go to division from brigade
