Fme Lampernisse & Nieppe 78. Sets 6h. 25m.] SEPTEMBER, 1915. [9th. New Moon, 10.53 a.m.

THURSDAY 9 [252-113] Jewish Year 5676 commences

Morning plotting notes - P.M. go To Transport Ferme Lampernisse to get clothing - usual 'putting off' & insolent indifference of Q.M. Sergts. Get pair of boots at Bde Qm. stores - Finally in disgust go to SgT-Maj Forbes & get an officer to phone the Transport to give us what we need. - As a result the QM very active - Get jack-knife, Trousers, blanket & braces

Have supper chez Flore Dereumaux. Get my Torn kilt mended - have to sit in the kitchen wearing a blue apron of Maries - quite inadequate - during the repairing. Sentry boxes being put up at every cross-road.

FRIDAY 10 [253-112]

To Nieppe making blue-prints of small map Brought before Col. Mitchell. Chief of Intelligence & praised for the map - Hear that I am to be asked for at Division.

Supper at Romarin[?] with Baxter the 'Major' & "Buckskin"

Hear new version of "From The Centre, extend" as given by Canadian subaltern at Salisbury "From the middle string out endways."[?]

Spent[?] German bullet strikes a policeman at HQ here - beds[?] in his puttee & merely bruises him - must have come 2 miles Plotting 1/2500 map.

SATURDAY 11 [254-111] 37th Week

Get object lesson on how Canadian Commissions are obtained - Gen Leckie sees candidate from 16th. Colonel does not recommend but quite willing to grant the man his discharge - very willing!! Coy.Officer states "this man formerly was lance-corporal - was reduced to the ranks for incompetency - therefore I cannot recommend him - Gen Leckie writes Division " I have seen this man and endorse the opinion of his Coy. Officer as to his non-suitability"

Hear later that this man’s commission is being engineered from Canada, and he will probably get it in the face of Gen Leckies turning him down cold.
