Route march by Hythe & Sandgate, past old castle. Medical inspection & saluting drill. To town with Blackie & Bennett. "The episode of the Orange" Buy old copy (1697) of Juvenal's Satires. Picture show in evening. Saw sign "No extra charge to Canadians".

First bayonet fighting practice with wooden guns, masks & padded jackets. Pitted against Guiney. Route march around by old castle. Squad drill pm. To town with Bennett, van Dyke, variety show at pleasure Gardens.

Little girls around for scraps, take scrapings from messplates ugh "Oy sye, mister you shouldn't wyste".

Pay parade, receive 20s, make out separation allowance card , due from Feb 2d.

Mess assistant in Middleton's place. Got old blackletter statutes of William lll. Leave same to be leather bound. General inspection of HiT this morning, another day wasted.

Losses of Battle Neuve Chatelle reported Allies 10,000, Germans 18000
