Shorncliffe Camp - Kent (22)

Route march over the town in the morning & battalion drill all afternoon. Served out two more blankets. "Spot" Goodrich, Bennett & I indulge in plaice, chips & a large Bass & picture show. Smoking all over the house. Find a bookshop & get German phrase book & copy of Dante, Gabriel Rossetti.

Battalion drill & review before Gen. Babington & McDougall. First Canadian to have their buttons polished. Ranks were steady. Guiney wants to know where they keep King George; want to chaw the rag with him. Too much ceromonial & elaborate parade evolution. Today tired out standing interminably at attention.

General clean-up. I have a awful time cleaning up the windows. Nothing else all day. Spend afternoon in museum. Canada represented by two bloated muskrats sitting on water lily pads eating black beetles & a cross mink labelled "skunk". Early British implements & weapons interesting . Little boy sings on barrack room table "It's a long wye to Tipperary" for coppers. Some of the refuse of the of the First Contingent arrive from Salisbury
