Mar 3rd On rounds very busy. Went to Arras where my men are working; filling in shell holes, etc. Saw Lieut Whyles & Lieut Roue of Berneville.

March 4th Sunday. Saw a Bosh air fighter which brought one of our machines down by machine gun fire, saw the Pilot fall out, who was killed, & saw the machine come down no WARLUS where the observ. was also killed - a most dreadful sight. Ten of my men working at Dead Man's corner Arras shelled by the German artillery. Very narrow escape as they ran in the dugouts. Many shells dropped. Letter from Jessie. Monday into new billet.

March 5th Very busy on my rounds. Went to ETRUM - ST AULINS - LOUEZ with Sgt Pearce. Called at R.E. Park saw Lieu Greenhill. Two inches of snow & two feet of mud. In a rotten billet. Walked into ARRAS to see my men filling in shell holes of the day before. Great deal of artillery activity from both sides "Fed up".
