My darling Lola

Thank you very much indeed for your sweet letter which has just arrived and also for the packet which is very nice but would you please send some more chewing gum as there is only one packet.

We have come back from the firing line for a few days of rest, there are very very few left of the splendid 7th Division, the fighting has been beyond anything in the history of the world and we have had to bear the brunt of it.
