whole show, even more than the so called Salonika front. When the first contingent of Russians landed at Salonika the French being very fond of show, as you know, had a great ceremony for them. They h d the Russians lined up on each side of the road and then made the Serbs march past them first, then the Italians, then they slouched past themselves: the Russians took no notice of any of themand remained quite unmoved. An English regular regiment then came past, marching very well indeed, upon which the Russians broke their ranks and cheered wildly, the French were absolutely furious about it, and made themselves most unpleasant to both the English and Rusians, Our men get on very well with the Russians and the Serbs, but will have no truck with the F rench or ice-cream vendors. The Irish get on particularly well wiht the Serbs, as they are born of the spirit drinking nations. Ihad a hitch with the tape, it came to an end and as it is a machine I have not worked before, I could not get it to go properly.
I heard a rather amusing yarn about a taxi driver in London, he had taken a fare from one of the hospitals to his house, on going back to the rank he looked inside his cab and found that the man had been violently sick inside, so he sung out to a pal of his and said, "Blime, Bill, what am I to do with that." His pal replied, "Take it round to Scotland Yard, if it not claimed in three days it is yours". Unpleasant but rather clever!
There is no need to get nervous about writing letters to me, I like them ve y much indeed, but am often away for days on end, hence the long intervals of my letters, when we do get
