My dearest old Dodie,

Thanks ever so much for your letter of 26 Aug, & also for the sympathy extended to me for my continued sojourn in England. It is not for any sin ( for I haven't committed any though it may be a sin of omission) or fore "sight" as you suggest, but simply as your account - you are the cause of it all - Providence in her wonderful way , is thus preserving me from all harm, that I may return in her own good time, & become your most faithful spouse. What ho! You are a lucky gal.

Why, your silly old ass, don't you realize that this "very wonderful palmist" is perfectly correct. I - the aforesaid future & faithful spouse - will really be at the head of a great institution viz "The British Army" , what? I'm just waiting for all those over there, who are senior to me, to get killed off, & then I stroll over as Commander-in-Chief of the British Armies. I suppose that is good example for you, eh? In any case, however, I wrote? that you will still flirt with me on my return. I like the "still" for you always refused to flirt with me, notwithstanding my broad hints, & of course I shall return with my pockets lined with gold, but you'll have a devil of a fight to get a "look in" even with such a Croesus as I shall be, let alone my many decorations, titles & all that sort of thing, dont you [?].
