We are at present on our way to Port Said, from there it is not yet settled where, but probably out East; we are 12 days out from England today, & during that time have had one succession of very heavy gales, & torrential rain, have only seen the sun twice, so we are not feeling in the best of humours, but I suppose we must make the best of a bad job, & as we are due in Port Said in two or three days, I must make a start at letter writing, in spite of the ship rolling her sides under; I always like to get the bulk of my writing done before arriving in Port, as we are generally kept pretty busy then. -- Well, dear, I wish you would explain a bit more fully about this fiancé of yours, etc, etc, & whether your name is still what it was or if it's changed. I have another apology - never could remember how to spell this word - to make -- I haven't had my photo taken yet, but I will do, & you shall have the very first; I don't seem to have got anything done since leaving home. This I reckon will reach you about your birthday, so here goes to wish you Many Happy returns, & good luck in everything, ours are pretty close together aren't they? See, you will be 26 won't you, how time does fly; & all that time I have only seen you once, and that was shortly after our first meeting. How is your mother? You never mention her, & how's May -- I hope they are both very well, you surely must feel very lonely at home by yourself, but I expect you have a good time all the same.
