As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths. They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- By the way, how long have you live over ?
A;- All the time.
Q;-For six years ? A;-Yes. Q;- Have the gates been locked with the chain ? A;-I never paid any attention to the gates. 21 #19 Willam Bridge, reeve or Richmond Munipality,Corner of #2

Mr Jackson;-How long have you been reeve ? A;- Nine years. Q;-You remember if the gates were on this bridge, or when they were out on this bridge? A;-I could not say, quite a number of years anyway. Q;-Six or sever years ? A;-Yes. Q;-Ten years anyway ? A;-Six. its quite possible, seven years anyway. Q;- A;- It serves a dual purpose,first as an aid to navigation, and guards the gates when the bridge is open. Thereis no provincial regulation to compel us to put a light, but we consider it is a protection to the public. Q;- It shows both sides when the bridge is closed ? A;-Yes. Q;-Have you a copy of the regulations about this ? A;Yes, still you are prohibted to use any light that will interfere with nagigation. I have no instructions from the Federal authorities as to the lights on the bridges. Q;- Who owns the bridge ? A;-It is owned partly and by South Vancouver. Mr Cowan;- Now which of the counciller has charge of this place? A;- I suppose that comes under the heading of the Board of Works. Q;- What councillor looks after it ? A;-Naturally the Council Board. Q;-Who is the head ? A;-Councillor Tommsey. Q;- Would he be expected to look after this bridge any more than any other councillor, or anything of that kind / A;-No. Q:- Have you any inspectors to look after the bridge ? A;-Yes. Q;- Why did you change the gates on the bridge ? A;- I couldnt say that. It was more to provide public protection.
