Aug 1st. Moved camp down to Battles Lake & stayed over night back to second lake next day; this Battles lake is a lovely lake some 25 miles long by 1 to 1 1/2 miles wide, as grazing or agricultural land around it being enclosed by mountains about 3000 ft high; our survey line crosses about 7 miles from its outlet. Drawing. "Throwing the axe a favorite game on a survey" Aug 2nd. We build a raft of red cedar on the lake and go for an exploring trip in the afternoon; see any amount of fine trout rising and we long to have a good meal of fresh trout once more;
