July 26th. Raft building is the order of the day on a lake; the only timber we can get hold of is "Yellow cedar" which is far too heavy for a raft but it has to go as no other is near at this altitude; it takes six men all day to put a decent one together; to be propelled by long oars called sweeps;

July 27th. Take a load of provisions ahead to lake and leave them there until the morning. See a bear in the distance scrambling on some distant rock which we yell ourselves hoarse at and then split our sides laughing to see him get off like a locomotive.

July 28th. Today we move camp to far end of second lake; I meet with a very unpleasant accident while steering the passenger raft across running my hand against a sharp axe and nearly cut off
