observations the rest of the hands cut out a trail so as to make packing go all the easier.

July 17th. Commissariat man arrives bringing us some fresh trout & also mail; reports smallpox very bad in Victoria paying two dollars a day for nurses and people getting panic stricken.

July 18th. Today we are all put on to cut trail so as to move camp in morning very rough road and rocky but 3 miles altogether see 2 bears growling round but no rifles to shoot them with.
