April 8th The rain is coming down in torrents all day. So we remain under canvass reading old papers, novels, etc

April 9th Another pouring day. One man goes out after deer and returns with a nice young fawn to repay him for his wetting.

April 10th Sunday once more: mending and washing is gone thro'. Also some fine trout are caught: our boss is seen washing stains off his waistcoat so everyone knows he is going to dinner at the settler's.

April 11th We proceed to get the distance across the lake by triangulation that is by running one side about one third of the distance across measuring the angles accurately then by trigonometry find the distance
