Diary of a Chain Man on a Government Survey on Vancouver Island

Tuesday March 27th

Starting from Victoria, Vancouver's Island with a Surveyor and fifteen Men, for the purpose of completing a Survey commenced two years previous; defining the line between the Dunsmuir Grant from the Government land: we were landed at Alberni by the C. P. R. Co Steamer Maude on the 29th [illegible]

Monday March 28th Has passed visiting some Dog fishing Stations and in landing supplies for some Sealing Schooners: three or four of these Schooners were waiting in the bay for fine weather: proceeding afterwards we landed at the flourishing town of Alberni.

Tuesday March 29th Where we landed our supplies warehousing them for the nights on the wharf: we then split up into two by twos and visited the places of interest in the aforesaid settlement: (Alberni is on the west coast of Vancouver Island: about 100 miles North of Victoria at the head
