Diary of a Chain Man on a Government Survey on Vancouver Island

Tuesday March 27th

Starting from Victoria, Vancouver's Island with a Surveyor and fifteen Men, for the purpose of completing a Survey commenced two years previous, defining the line between the Dunsmuir [Strait] from the [Gordon Inuit] land: we were landed at Alberni by the C. P. W. Co Steamer Maude on the 29th [illegible].

Monday, March 28th Has passed visiting some (illegible) of fishing stations and in landing supplies for some whaling schooners: three or four of these schooners were waiting in the bay for fine weather: proceeding afterwards we landed at the flourishing town of Alberni.

Tuesday, March 29th When we landed our supplies were [housing?] there for the rights on the wharf: we three split up into two and twoand visited the place of interest in the afore said settlement: (Alberni is on the west coast of Vancouver Island: about 100 miles north of Victoria at the read
