German Gun Pit - An antillery officer went out in front of our lines on the Vermelles-Hulluch Road + [recognized?] a German gun-pit. The pit is smaller than ours, having an auxiliary ammun pit about 6' long, 2' wide, 2' deep forming a wing on either side. The gun-pit is dug right in + the roof supports rest on ground level. The roof is one layer 6" beams + 2 sheets galvanized iron, 2 more layers of 6" beams + then earth turfed over. A communication trench led to a small dug-out for the gunner + held dugouts for ammunition, there being about 200 shells in them in basket carriers, of which the officer brought in one, together with some maps.
