Wednesday July 6th/15 Left in peace all day -- 8 pm. sent on working party digging & sandbagging communication trench -- Cold windy night & pitch dark except for German flares - Stray bullets whining past but nobody hit Sick all day & dead tired at night -- hardly know what I am doing -- Too dark to see one's shovel -- Get home to the cement pigpen at 3 am. Jack Enoch * I dig one traverse but Jack insists on doing most of the work. Wednesday July 7th/15 Sent to Bde HQr's with fatigue party for 10 shovels each -- meet common sense in the person of Brigadier General Turner who suggests that one limber would have saved us a heavy pack --
