distributing extras and ran out & got one. Had hardly got back to the cafe when a row broke out at the next table and a big crowd collected. There was a lot of shouting, as usual in a Ger. row. There was some abusive language about England & the English and things might have been very disagreeable for me had I been recognised as an "Englander". Fortunately I was not, so walked home when the row had subsided. There was a noisy demonstration all through the rest of the night. A large mob collected in front of the British Consulate on the altenmarkt. The coat of arms had been removed by the consul. (see note last page of book)

Aug 5th. The British consul resigned
