Dear Fred

Probably you thought I had forgotten you altogether but the reason I hav'nt written before is that I couldnt give you any information as to our movements or where we were located but now I can tell you a little of what has happened since we have been across the channel. We left England about the end of July for Flanders and a week after we were in action in the Ypres salient at Voormazeele - St Eloi and Kemmel Hill and put in two months there. We were in cellars and dugouts in the famous convent at Voormazeele for three weeks and it was pretty warm there in the trenches every night working under machine gun fire - whiz-bangs, coalboxes etc and ever other diabolical contrivance that "Fritz" has invented to make things uncomfortable for
