My dear old Dodie,

The very worst has happened - No, not what you think, but something much worse - My name was deleted from the list of Officers sent over to France last Wednesday.

On the Tuesday morning definitive information came through Kent all officers wioored[?] for France were to be in Shorncliffe Station at 9.30 am Wednesday, of course we were all as cheery as men could possibly be.

About 2.30 Tuesday afternoon the list came in, & my name was not there. I at once thought it was a clerical error, went to the Brigade Office, & in about 1/2 hours I learned that it was not a clerical error - By Jove - I then got busy - I again went to the Bde Office & got them to telephone to the Reinforcement officer & got it confirmed. I ran out, got a horse & galloped over to Shorncliffe to Divisional Headquarters, there found out that my name had been sent through with all the others to the War Office, that it came back with my name & several others cut out. As he is the highest man here to know anything, I could do no more. Whether he was lying, of course I can't tell.
