10. A.Co. runners took me up to Front line from Bn Hqrs. Very dark night & much new wire put out across our front between F.L. & B.H.Q. wh. confused guides. They wd have taken me past our F.L. down Camouflage Rd into German line if I had not been there before.

12. No dug outs in this line & nothing better than funk holes for shelter. (A "funk hole" is a recess dug out of the forward side of the trench sometimes big enough to take whole body at full length but not usually so big as if unsupported & may cause parapet to fall in).

This was a really bad night but the attack which we expected did not come off.
