My dear brother

Christmas Day is over with its joy & sadness & we are now looking forward to a New Year. What will it bring us. God knows & he won't tell.

If we knew the worse we could not hear it - if we knew the best we should not earn it.

However at this time it is impossible to forget or overlook what is practically certain that there is much hardship, trouble & death to be met with yet. We can meet it bravely but we can't avoid it altogether even though death may pass us by once more.

What one would like to feel is that there was more ground for hoping for victory within a definite period. Nothing but victory can satisfy thinking men but it is easy to understand how the very talk of peace unnerves the fighting muscles of many on both sides
