He is an excellent boy but complains that he has had only one letter from his father since he left home.

Those letters mean an awful lot to us out here & they can easily be made so interesting to us though we can say little of interest to those outside. If you see Mrs. Beaven you might tell her I have never had any word from Katie though I sent the parcel & afterwards wrote. Somebody told me that she had developed quite a literary turn. When she was a young girl she used to keep a remarkable sort of diary. Tell Fowkes that the rain we had today reminded me of Sol Duc only there was thunder and lightning as well - Tell Mother that Col. Andrews got me copy of the Psalms called the Soldiers Psalter, a little pocket edition wh. is always in my pocket & is the only book of any kind except working books & my diary wh. I can carry. I have in my kit the nice little khaki N.T wh. she gave me but I have my kit only
