work in his holidays & incidentally getting up a book on cathedrals of France - His help was certainly most propitious for though we knew we were in one of the most interesting towns of France we did not know where to look for the chief points.

He had lunch with us afterwards & of all the robberies I have had to subsist to this was the worst. Everything was overcharged & the bill was added up wrong & the wrong change given. It is a wonderful place - the Cathedral with the Lady chapel - the wonderful tomb of George Ambroise [sic], [Ar?] - the stained glass, the butter tower - the Palais of Justice with extraordinary oak ceiling & stained glass - The Jalle de Pas [Pe?] with its famous marbly table - The memorials to Joan of Arc - The association with records of Dukes of Normandy - a private house which beats all for the [?] & perfection of its stone carving of the Field of the Cloth of Gold - The Seine [?] traffic - The Great Clock with its more interesting historical evolutions & a host of things. But the people are all robbers.
